Prince Estate Releases New Single 'Holly Rock' With Colorful Video

Prince's music lives on!

On Thursday (July 25), the music legend's estate released the music video for "Holly Rock," the second single from Prince's posthumous demo album, Originals, which the late singer's estate released on his birthday last month.

The track, originally written and recorded for Prince's longtime collaborator Sheila E., has Prince's quintessential rock, funk sound, and features him singing over an uptempo 80's-sounding beat. Prince is said to have recorded "Holly Rock" at Sunset Sound Studios in April 1985, the same week he recorded his 1986 hit "Kiss."

"While Prince gave Sheila E. sole writing and producer credit, he actually produced the track himself and co-wrote it with Sheila," said Prince's estate. "Though not a hit at the time, the electrifying full six and half-minute version has become a firm fan favorite due to the scarcity of copies of the soundtrack."

For the single's music video, Prince's team went the animated route, enlisting London's Electric Light Studios to bring an animated Prince to life with colorful graphics and his iconic fashion.

"Holly Rock" was originally recorded for the soundtrack of the 1985 film Krush Groove. However, it never made it on any of Prince's 39 studio albums until Originals. The posthumous album features 15 tracks, sung by Prince, that he wrote and gave away to other artists, including tracks like Sinead O'Connor's "Nothing Compares 2 U," Kenny Rogers' "You're My Love," Apollonia 6's "Sex Shooter," The Time's "Jungle Love," Sheila E.'s "The Glamorous Life" and more.
